In 2011, the investment cost of the Flamanville EPR reactor is estimated at €6 billion.
Constructing the pilot European Pressurized Reactor (EPR) nuclear reactor in Flamanville (Normandy, France), EDF nuclear engineering is driving the Group’s aspirations and paving the way to the future of power generation. This project is a crucial step in preparing for the replacement of EDF’s current nuclear power plants. One of EDF engineering’s key objectives, working alongside Areva, a long-standing partner and the supplier of the EPR nuclear steam supply system, is to more widely deploy the expertise developed in France. Our ultimate goal is to standardize the EPR on an international level by leveraging the experience gained with the Flamanville 3 project.
The target for beginning marketable output is set at 2016. Eight years of work and the mobilization of up to 3,000 professionals will have gone into the creation of this project. Its cutting edge technology marks a real improvement in safety, environmental protection, and economic performance. This third generation reactor will consume 17% less fuel than its predecessors and provide a 36% increase in annual electricity output. The volume of radioactive waste will be lower overall and a seawater desalination plant will reduce the intake of freshwater.

A high-voltage, 138 Km long transmission line to Thailand
The Nam Theun 2 dam in Laos has been commissioned in May 2010. Hydropower is the main form of renewable energy generated by EDF. This project, a major commitment for the Group in Southeast Asia, mobilized over 9,000 employees at its height, of which more than 80% were Laotian.
EDF has fully exercised its role as architect and lead contractor, from design and supplier selection through to building and operating the facility. The Nam Theun 2 power plant is located on a tributary of the Mekong River and represents a major contribution to the development of Laos, as well as a source of energy for the northeastern quarter of Thailand. Indeed, this region will be the main beneficiary of the electricity generated by the plant’s six turbines.
